Amy, 26

How would you describe yourself?

‘Uh, I think I’m really hard working. Um, and I have big, big dreams and that’s why I want to chase them.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘‘Cause I think it’s important, and, if people don’t know to chase their dreams, then they’ll just give up on them like a lot of people do and, that’s sad… (laughs)

Katherine, 35

How would you describe yourself?

‘I like to be silly.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

Katherine currently lives in Ingleburn NSW, and was photographed in Chippendale NSW, Australia – June 2015.

Kay, 30

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um, I’m someone who, um, is creative. And loves people, loves God, and, loves puppets.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘I chose this message because this is a message my dad says all the time. Except when he says it, he actually says, ‘be blave’. But that’s a, a bit hard to write that on a sign. And um I’ve been thinking about it a lot because I think everybody needs a bit of encouragement to be brave and everybody’s brave in different ways. I think it’s brave to do, um, what you believe in. It’s brave to do what you love. Um, even when it’s different, it’s brave to live out your faith, even when it’s not, um, popular. Um, and it’s for some people, it’s really brave just to get out of bed and go out the door. Um, and just smile even though the whole world seems to be falling apart. So I think it’s a message, that has given me a lot of encouragement thanks to my dad, so I hope it gives other people encouragement to ‘Be Blave!’’

Gail, 55

How would you describe yourself?

‘I’d say I am… outgoing. Bit self-conscious. Thoughtful, and kind.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Because I feel that that’s something that people tend to keep putting off things that they, um, they’d like to live life but they put it off and, quite often, sometimes, to the detriment that it’s too late by the time that they finally come around to, being able to you know, be able to afford to do or health reasons or whatever.’

Gail was photographed in The Ponds NSW, Australia – June 2015.

Gaz, 43

How would you describe yourself?

‘Genuine. Caring.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Uh, ‘cause that’s been in my head for about a week. Um, that’s the only reason. Why has it been in my head? Because we were at Catholic Care the other week, and, he gave me a little blue dot, he drew a blue dot, and he said, what do you see? And I said, a blue dot. And he said, is that it? And I said, yeah. He said, just a blue dot? I said, yeah. He said, it is what it is. That’s it. It’s just been in my head, for a week.’

Gaz currently lives and was photographed in The Ponds NSW, Australia – June 2015.

Rosie, 5

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. I will always believe in myself because. I, I, when I were playing ballet and I don’t believe in myself, I’ll just, I’ll just remember to believe in myself and keep on dancing.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Because if you believe in yourself, it makes, it gets you back on what you want to do. And you can do whatever you want? While you’re playing, while you’re doing what you want to do.’

Rosie currently lives and was photographed in The Ponds NSW, Australia – June 2015.

Gwendoline, 55

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Life is about connection and contentment. Um, I think we’re in this world to connect with other people because, as human beings, we experience both good times and bad times. And I think through both those times it’s great to share it with someone, and especially through the bad times. That, you can be supported by that person or those people so, if you can connect with others, you know you can be there for them and they can be there for you, in life. And what sort of person would I describe myself? I’d like to think I was a really fun-loving person but I’m too serious. But I’m a really hard worker and I try to support people where I can, try to do the best that I can, but I’ve really got to realise that I’m not perfect and be happy with that. And then I think life for me would have been a lot easier. But um, I’ve still got a way to go, so hopefully I can live out that philosophy, yeah. You’re not perfect but it’s ok, neither is anyone else.’

Gwendoline lives in Baulkham Hills, and was photographed in The Ponds NSW, Australia – June 2015.

‘Um, probably bitchy (laughs). A bit strong-minded. Yeah, strong-minded and bitchy. I say what’s on my mind.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Uh, I guess it’s a message to myself just as much as it is to the world because I need to ring the bitchiness in a bit.’

Megan currently lives in Buxton NSW, and was photographed in The Ponds NSW, Australia – June 2015.

Colleen, 61

Arthur, You Guess

How would you describe yourself?

‘Well, I’m a creative person, a kind person and a loveable person I reckon.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Well, we all need to cry, we all need to smile, we all need to laugh, each day, so we can focus on all the things that come into our lives. And, we need to be kind to each other because, we as humans, we need, we are each other, we are all a part of each other so we all need to treat each other with respect, and be kind to each other, as how you would like to be treated. So to me, what goes around, comes around.’

Arthur currently lives and was photographed in Seven Hills NSW, Australia – May 2015.

Aida, 52

How would you describe yourself?

‘I am woman. I laugh, I cry, I love. I love to give, I have a positive attitude and I always see the good in people. I’m creative, love to cook and love people to eat my food. And I’m just, sorry, and I’m just me.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um. Um! (laughs) Because I believe what you give in life, you get back. So for me, it’s preparing for my older years. I love to be kind and listen to older people, um, so hopefully when I’m older, I will get that in return… For me, I think that, uh, we all get caught up in our own little world of being busy and too busy, don’t have time to visit an aunty or an uncle or a mother or a father, a grandparent. But to me, that is… they are precious, they have so much to teach us, we can learn so much from them, and we need to make time, for the elderly. They have made our world up until now, so yeah, we have a lot to learn from them.’

Aida currently lives in The Ponds NSW, and was photographed in Seven Hills NSW, Australia – May 2015.

Murray, 30

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um, well. I never really, I don’t know, how I would describe myself? It would be, I guess, I don’t want to say a profession ‘cause like I shouldn’t be defined by my profession, so I – I didn’t think about this one. I would describe myself as, someone, aw this is terrible. This is what I do for a living and I can’t answer questions. Um, yeah, I would describe myself as an easy, easy-going, laid back sorta guy. Not  lazy? Like you can be laid back but not lazy. Uh, hopefully ambitious person. Uh, yeah. And likes to have a laugh. Got red hair-ish. Pale skin that’s it, uh yeah, family.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘I chose that message for my sign because it’s, originally I was gonna have a different message and then I thought about it and I was like, meh. But I guess if we all do communicate our intentions, uh, then we just put things on the line I guess. And you’d say, you know I com- I guess there’d be a lot more peaceful the world would be. ‘Cause you can either outwardly say I am being a jerk for this reason or you can say, uh, actually. Can I, I, I’ll st-start again, sorry Wendy, if you’re gonna have to translate this, transcribe this. The reason I chose, uh, ‘Communicate Your Intentions’ is I guess people tend to do things without, ah, when they go to do something they, they, uh, (to himself) when people communicate their intentions… (turns back) I had, I had it like fully down pat, but I guess um, aw. I guess with people if, if you do, if you yeah, no one really communicates what they’re doing or I find, neh. Can I do part two? Yeah alright. Alright I’ll think about it. I gotta say it more succinctly. I’d hate myself if I had to produce this, interview myself f*ck. Um, yeah. So. If, I think, I think people do things with hidden meanings, that’s what I’m trying to say. A lot of people do things with hidden meanings and it can be malicious, or it can be not, uh, or it can be a good intention, but I think if you communicate your intention from the outward, there’s no miscommunication. I guess, and that’s what I’m trying to say is that if I say, the reason that I’m doing this is because, you can either share that with me or you can understand where I’m going, you understand where I’m coming from and you can either accept it or don’t accept it but this is why I’m doing it. That way there’s no confusion. And also I think it would allow people to weed out the bullshit. Like people do, do maliciously, and people you know, have bad intentions, but if they communicate that bad intention then, they could stop and think about it and go, ‘ooh, actually.’ Or people can just, I guess in a way, uh, hold for plane. (A plane flies overhead…) I guess in a way, people um, it would allow people to see you for what you are. And there would be no miscommunication ‘cause you’ve stated, ‘this is what I’m doing.’ Yeah.

Murray currently lives in Neutral Bay NSW, and was photographed in Marrickville NSW, Australia – May 2015.

Suga, 30

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um, I’m a Sri Lankan editor slash filmmaker slash wife, um, about to move homes and communities for the fifth time in my life so. Yeah, we’re in a transitional period, so I’m not sure how I’d describe myself at the moment.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘So, the message is a quote from the 1958 film ‘Auntie Mame’, which was a midday movie that was playing in the background of my house one day when I was cleaning. And maybe because this is said over and over in the film, but it’s kind of gotten into my brain and it’s become my mantra. Um, my husband and I are about to move overseas and I guess it’s a reminder that life can give you so many opportunities if you choose to grab them… In addition to what I was saying, um, now I’ve forgotten it. Um, I was lucky enough to be born into a family that had lots of choices so my life is a banquet, but lots of people either don’t have the choice or don’t see the choices in front of them. (turns away) Is that what I was saying before, I can’t remember now. (turns back) Yes. Yes that’s all.’

Suga currently lives in Neutral Bay NSW, and was photographed in Marrickville NSW, Australia – May 2015.

Angela, 34

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um, I’m pretty driven. Um, I’m a happy person, I’m very self-reliant. Um, yeah, that’s who I am.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘I chose it because um, I’ve always loved learning new things, I love the challenge of learning new things, and I really don’t like giving up.’

Angela currently lives and was photographed in Marrickville NSW, Australia – April 2015.

Stewart, 36

How would you describe yourself?

‘I would describe myself as a person who can, uh, find a way to relate to just about any person I meet in the world, whether it’s uh through some sort of empathy or being able to change myself to relate to them.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘I meet so many people who seem to be chronically grumpy. They, I think it, I think it’s an infectious disease and if people just learned to smile sometimes, they wouldn’t be so grumpy all the time.’

Stewart currently lives in Newtown NSW, and was photographed in Marrickville NSW, Australia – April 2015.

Bryce, 36

How would you describe yourself?

‘I’m a somewhat quiet, sort of shy person, introverted. But fairly down to earth.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Uh, ‘These Are The Days’ are sorta like a sign to suggest that you gotta live in the moment. You gotta not take things for granted and um, not regret um, not regret looking back and thinking that those were the better days before. Uh, I promised myself I wouldn’t be going ‘uh’. Um, yeah and just, just appreciate the moment that you’re in.’

Bryce currently lives in Windsor Downs NSW, and was photographed in Marrickville NSW, Australia – April 2015.

Tahnee

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um I would describe myself firstly as a very proud mother and wife. Um I think I am a kind and friendly person that is also… I am creative. I think I’ve discovered this new creative side to myself recently which I’m proud of. And um, I guess I’m an emotional person. I wear my heart on my sleeve and uh, people always know what I’m feeling.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Ok. I chose my message, sorry, I’m not prepared… (looks up pre-prepared answer on her mobile phone) …Ok, that’s not it. All right. I wanted to put this out into the universe as a reminder to myself really. It’s so important to do things based on what makes you happy. I think it’s nice to consider other people’s feelings, but as a self-confessed worrier, I’m definitely guilty of caring too much about what others think and often making decisions based on that. We’re all here to enjoy life. Staying true to yourself and doing what makes you happy is the key.’
