Nikita, 24

How would you describe yourself?

‘…Tired? I’m a mum, so I have two young kids and they keep me on my feet!’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘My sign is ‘I Ate Too Much And My Belly Broke’ because at the moment, my three year old son has a scratch on his tummy, and every time I ask him how he got it, he just says he ate too much, and it broke. So yeah, it’s his belly breaking. (laughs)’

Chloe, 27

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um I think I’m a very bubbly person, take life as it comes, just try to have fun as I go.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘I think it’s because a lot of people just don’t take enough time to look at the simple things. You know, going outside when it’s sunny, enjoying that fresh gust of wind and not thinking of anything and just enjoying what this life is.’

Chloe currently lives in Noble Park VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Natasha, 22

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um I would describe myself as very laid back, very free and always, trying to do, things that I can that are spontaneous and try to keep the fun in everything yeah.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Uh I chose this message because, um, I think it, I think everyone needs to be reminded not to take everything so seriously and to always have fun, and to always find that child within yourself to be able to you know have fun, and do what you want.’

Natasha lives in Endeavour Hills VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Craig, 27

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um, I’m just a guy.’

Is that it?

‘Yeah.

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um, it’s something that I heard a few years ago and it’s something that I try to live by. Um it’s not something that I tend to do very often but, it’s something for me to think about.’

Craig lives in Cranbourne West VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Shannan

Sarah, 22

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um, I’m not too sure because I think I’m still trying to figure that out.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Because I think people forget to be human sometimes. Um, and are glued to their phone and obsessed with work, too much, too often.’

Sarah lives in Narre Warren VIC, and was photographed as part of the Escapees Theatre in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Alie, 24

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. I am tall. um, I get sick often, but I love to laugh.’

‘Because travelling is the best thing that you could possibly do. Is that enough?’

Alie lives in Narre Warren VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Jackson, 22

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. I’d describe myself as, I suppose selfless and always striving to improve something about myself. Um, so yeah I suppose I, like to put, I put pretty much everyone that’s close to me before myself, which can sometimes be a little bit of a flaw but it’s something I can’t really, can’t really help (laughs). Um yeah and just constantly pushing to improve and I suppose better myself as a person.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um, this message is actually, um, it’s like I suppose a saying at my gym. I train at um, sort of like a, a combat sports gym, um, where I train mixed martial arts and jujitsu. Um. I suppose it really just shows that anything that you really want to be successful with, you have to make some kind of sacrifice. Um, with me, I train quite a lot, um and to get better, I’m sacrificing parts, um, of my life like going out to parties and things like that because I want to improve, and get um, I suppose become really good at what, at what I’m training to do. So I suppose that’s what that really means to me, yeah.’

Jackson lives in Narre Warren VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Sharnika, 23

How would you describe yourself?

‘Mm, I don’t know, should’ve listened to the questions. Um.’

Do you want to have a think about it?

‘No. I think I’m… I don’t know… I don’t even know the last time I had to describe myself. Um… (laughs).’

Well, let me start with the next one. Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Uh, ‘cause I feel like I’m a controlling person so I like to control what others do a lot of the time and I find myself wishing that people didn’t do a lot of things they did, or, yeah. So I work in customer service so a lot of the time I think to myself, ‘ugh, why do they have to do that? I wish they just didn’t.’ So I think that’s the message I would like to send to people, just don’t do whatever it is that you’re doing. (laughs)’

And how would you describe yourself?

‘Controlling.’

Sharnika lives in Dandenong VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Jasmin, 20

How would you describe yourself?

‘Oh! Um, I’m kind of boring (laughs). And when I’m not boring, I’m usually with people I like, so, that’s about it.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um. It, it sort of represents me I guess (laughs). I’m sort of random. In a way, and I like pizza, I don’t know. Pizza makes me happy.’

Jasmin lives in Narre Warren VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Damien, 23

How would you describe yourself?

‘Uh, in what regard?’

In any regard you want.

‘Um… that’s a really good question. Um, probably just a fairly, fairly relaxed person, a lot of love to give. Uh. Been told I’m fairly smart, so I try and go with that. Um, but I find my interests are all over the board, I haven’t really got one major major passion. Uh. Don’t know that I can add anything else to that.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Because it really resonates with my beliefs, that you know, you do… like everybody has, like today, all we have is because of people from the past. And we benefit from that. We also have to take the bad with the good, and we suffer from humanity’s mistakes as if they were our own.’

Damien currently lives in Pakenham VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Claire, 20

How would you describe yourself?

‘Uh individual unique, and chilled. Uh, can’t think of really anything else. Strong-minded, independent. (laughs)’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Because ‘Non Timebo Mala’ in Latin means ‘I Will Fear No Evil’. I study latin so it’s a passion of mine. And yeah, basically just like I will be not a prisoner of my own fears, and like I will not care what the world thinks, I won’t care what anyone else thinks ‘cause all that matters is what I think, and, just…(laughs) Feel free to make that into nicer words, not what I’ve exactly said.’

Claire lives in Narre Warren VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Nathaniel, 22

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. I would describe myself… as, as many things. Um. Like, I’m a son, I’m a brother, I’m a friend. Um, but mostly, like, mostly I’m a musician. Um, I play drums, uh I do sound engineering. And um, I’ve always been in love with music and performance. And um, I would, yeah I’d say that’s like the biggest part of me, I’ve always loved performing and, and every aspect of it.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Well, one thing that I’ve learnt with live performance, is that this, that anything that can go wrong, will definitely go wrong. There’s, yeah, I’ve, just, so many things. So many unexpected things always happen and um, it’s always to be, in a mindset where you are prepared for things to go wrong because, it’s, you’re less likely to panic and you’re, it’s a lot easier to keep a level head to deal with certain situations. And um, even even in life, just in general. Things, things go wrong all the time, and in very unexpected ways. And uh, it’s, you can’t you can’t prepare for everything but for what you can prepare for, yeah, that’s, best prepare.’

Nathaniel lives in Endeavour Hills VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Vanessa, 28

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um, loud. Um, as I’ve gotten older, I’m a lot more confident. I’m very determined to get what I want. Uh I’m very passionate about what I do, so if I don’t care, I’m not going to do it well. But I like to do things well. So I’m quite pedantic, in that way (laughs).’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um, I chose ‘You Are Worth The Effort’, uh, it’s something that I’ve been working on a lot, in the past twelve months. I’ve had a very tough year and I’ve been part of a bootcamp group that have been incredibly supportive and, my trainer has been trying to teach me that I’m worth the effort, to spend a little bit of time on my self. And, it’s something that I try and instil also in our company members, is that, they’re worth the effort. It’s ok for them to ask for a little bit of help, they’re not wasting anyone’s time by saying, look, I’m feeling a bit down today, and talking to someone. So, I think everyone is worth the effort in terms of looking after their physical selves and their mental health. I think it’s very important.’

Vanessa lives in Cranbourne West VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Lachlan, 19

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. Um, I guess I’m a little bit introverted like, I have, I have a passion for things but I’m just more, like closed in with it like. Like um, around other people I’ll just be a bit dull I suppose but in my own, in my own room, in my own world and stuff, I’m, can be very passionate and caring about things that I love like, just, you know like movies, games, books and stuff.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Well, it’s um, it’s a quote by a philosopher who’s name I can never, ever pronounce. Every time someone tells me I keep forgetting but he’s the same guy who came up with the God is dead theory, we killed him. But, that should be a hint for you if you want to google him but, um. Yeah um, like I’m a, I don’t play music but if there was an award for listening to music, I’d probably win it ‘cause, I mean I just love listening to music, I have so many different tastes like. I just have, there are so many bands living and dead that I’m just a massive fan of and I fell like it’s as if music might just be the greatest gift ever. And, like, to live in a world without it is just, suicidally boring. ‘

(Commonly translated from the original German text as “Without music, life would be a mistake”, this quote is taken from the book ‘Twilight of the Idols’ by philosopher and cultural critic Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) – wh)

Lachlan lives in Narre Warren VIC, and was photographed as past of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Alice, 25

How would you describe yourself?

‘I guess I would say I’m a bit odd. Um, a strange mix of optimistic and realistic, and, my inner child comes out, far too frequently.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Anytime something bad happens, I like to think about the last time I thought it was the end of the world. And realise that it wasn’t then and it probably isn’t now. Um, and I really think that who we are is a culmination of everything that’s ever happened, whether it be good or bad. So if you can like who you are and understand that who you are has come from everything you’ve experienced, then you can be at peace with everything that has ever happened to you.’

Alice lives in Endeavour Hills VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Morgan, 21

How would you describe yourself?

‘Uh, sarcastic, to the point. Uh, I really don’t beat around the bush.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘‘Cause I’m really sick of, especially of the older generation, lauding it over us that we’re always using technology, and before technology it was newspapers, and before that, it was something else. I mean the Renaissance is nothing but six-hour selfies. So. You know, I’m tired of everyone producing these comments that technology is the devil and that it’s the end of the world because it’s not. We’ve always been like this.’

Morgan currently lives in Narre Warren VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

‘Foxtel’, 26

How would you describe yourself?

‘I would describe myself as, uh very loud, volume-wise. Uh, authentic. Um, energetic and friendship based.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘I choosed this message because I feel like a lot a change in the world needs to begin with ourselves, we need to look inside ourselves, see what we don’t like and then start with that otherwise we sort of become, really big hypocrites or we… It’s really easy to become really bitter at the world, why can’t the world be like this? Why can’t the world do that? Why don’t you start with you and then, maybe people can follow and you can lead by example rather than just yelling at people and, just being angry and bitter all the time.’

Crystal a.k.a. ‘Foxtel’ currently lives in Cranbourne VIC, and was photographed as part of The Escapees Theatre Company in Hallam VIC, Australia – September 2015.

Blake, 23

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. Crazy and a kid at heart, and like I never want to grow up so I’m always like, playing around and all that stuff so, kid at heart.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um, I chose Soup Is Not A Sharing Food just because it’s not a sharing food, and I’ve actually had someone ask if they could have some of my soup and I’m like, no, it’s not a sharing food. And it’s just stuck with me ever since then, so. So, yeah, it’s part of like not growing up that’s always been part of like, oh soup is not a sharing food! Yep, I’d say that when I was a kid so, I just keep being a kid.’
