 How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. I guess… um. Creative? And, um, I don’t know. Um, I don’t know.’

‘Cause pineapple belongs on pizza.’

Alexandra, 28

How would you describe yourself?

‘That’s a deeper question than I thought you were about to ask me. (laughs) Uh, I’d describe myself as… a quiet person. (laughs) Can we come back to that one? I’ll think of something that’s not, uh, really self-deprecating and, embarrassed. Um, aw I think of myself as funny, and accomodating. And like I… I don’t know. I’m like a bit of a funny jerk. Salty! I’m uh, um, I’m on the nice side of salty. Um in a very caring way. Very protective. Maybe like a golden retriever, like a very loyal, (laughs) golden retriever. Or a cocker spaniel, cocker spaniel’s better. Um yeah if I, I would say that I am as loyal as a dog and as salty as – anchovies. (laughs) Fetta would’ve been better.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um. So I think that we see a lot of bad things that happen in the world. And it’s really easy to get caught up and think, aw the world’s turned to shit and that there is no good out there anymore. But from running a very small local cafe where you meet the same people everyday, um you know that that’s just kind of bullshit and it’s bigger picture stuff, but what matters is the people that you see everyday or, um your neighbours because I know a lot of people who’ve become friends or become really good support networks for each other just from meeting in a neighbourly way. Like at the cafe or, you know they just see each other around and they all relate to each other and they all live similar lives. We’re all in the same demographic here, and I think that helps keep you grounded and remember that there are, that most people are good. Um and there are shit people out there and they seem to make the loudest noise but it’s not what we live by everyday. So yeah. That’s my, that’s my sign.’

Thank you.

‘Also sometimes your neighbours are hot, and you want to make out with them but they’re just neighbours and you can’t. But sometimes they are.’

Alexandra was photographed in Northcote, Victoria – October 2017.

Libby, 35

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. A… writer. A mum. Um. I like to think of myself as approachable, most of the time. Um, very dirty, which most people don’t realise. (laughs)’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Oh, it’s just a thing that I used to tell myself when I was going through a really hard time with my separation, and that I had to be the strong person for everyone and that sometimes people, I felt like people forgot that I needed a hug too. So it was just something that I would tell people. And I think about it now a lot when I see people in trouble and people, the people that you least expect might need hugs.’

Libby was photographed in Nunawading, VIC – September 2017.

Christabel, 24

How would you describe yourself?

‘Uh, I would describe myself as a person who’s very passionate about what they want, and what they believe in. Um, sometimes possibly too passionate (laughs).’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um. I think it’s like, it’s something I just, that I just kind of made up for myself, but I… I really do believe that it’s something that you have to live your life by, not in a naive way, or in a way like that you’re in denial about what can really happen or what should happen but just that you always have to be, your own, biggest supporter and once you start kind of like, believing that, things are not going to happen for you or that maybe things are like it’s a sign that you shouldn’t be doing whatever it is that you’re doing, that you kind of unlock, unlock the door to, bad performance and to kind of inviting, um, negative consequences into your life basically. Yep. I believe that you, that you, that you invite that stuff in. By not believing in yourself. ‘

Christabel was photographed in Nunawading, VIC – September 2017.

Paul, 37

 How would you describe yourself?

Um, I’m Paul, I’m a writer, I’m thirty-seven years old. Uh, I’m… a slightly anxious but usually quite calm, creative type and, I think of myself as a sensitive soul, I guess.

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

Um. Well, I picked this message actually because, my mum’s on my mind today because it would have been her sixtieth birthday tomorrow. And she was a massive fan of Tolkien. And my dad is too. And they both raised me on reading me ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ and, um. And I think this is a nice message to, everyone and, I agree with it.

Paul was photographed in Nunawading, VIC – September 2017.

Pavan, 22

How would you describe yourself?

‘Myself? Oh, I’m, uh, quite, um, uh… (laughs) Um, oh! I, um, I like being around other people. Um, I like listening to their stories, um, uh, and I would… I like to have fun. I like to have fun (laughs).’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Because, um, as I said, I like to listen to other people, to like listen to other people and improvising is, uh, contrary to popular belief is all about listening to the last thing someone said. Um, and so, if you ever find yourself frazzled or, uh, disorientated, just look around you, your surroundings, um, and use that as the inspiration to then inform your, uh, subsequent actions, subsequent actions, actions. And that’s what’s going to make you feel great.’

Pavan was photographed in Nunawading, VIC – September 2017.

Shane, 33

How would you describe yourself?

‘I would describe myself as creative, passionate, and… always looking for the positives in life.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Because I feel it reaffirms my belief that, um, you can put your mind to any… whatever you put your mind to you can achieve.’

Shane was photographed in Nunawading, VIC Australia – September 2017.

Matthew, 31

How would you describe yourself?

‘Uh, I would describe myself as a writer, and I love thinking and I love ideas.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Uh, I think it’s a, good message to always keep in the back of your head. Um, because if you were to get frustrated or concerned or annoyed about something then it’s worth knowing that things aren’t always simple, and that the world is, you know, a complicated place with lots of different views and perspectives and you can’t just boil everything down to one reason.’

Matthew was photographed in Nunawading, VIC – September 2017

Gabrielle, 34

How would you describe yourself?

‘I would describe myself as someone who is very nurturing, caring of others. I always try to treat others like how I would like to be treated, I think that’s a very important, um, thing. Uh, I think I, yeah, can be kind and loving, um, a little bit stubborn at times (laughs), bit moody being a Cancerian (laughs), you know I’ve got the moods that change with the moon and things like that. Um. But yeah, I think I can be very loyal and friendly as well.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘I chose this message because, uh, well first of all, I recently read, uh, Alain de Botton’s book ‘The Course of Love’ and it really resonated with me, and like I previously said about how I try and treat others, you know, how I would like to be treated. I think the message is very simple, and that is to, um, approach every situation uh, and every person that you meet with kindness, and with love. Because, everyone’s fighting their own battles. You don’t know what other people, um you know, are experiencing and going through, and, therefore we can’t judge others, you know, on face value. And so I think, you know, as human beings we need to just be loving in everything that we do, in all of our words, in all of our actions. Simple.’

Gabrielle was photographed in Enmore Park NSW, Australia – June 2016.

Alicia, 36

How would you describe yourself?

‘I would describe myself as, pretty laid back, friendly sort of lass, who has a love of words, and likes to write poetry, but is a huge procrastinator when it comes to fulfilling that creativity (laughs).’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um. Damn it! I said um. And you’re gonna put that in too? (laughs) I think that joining a choir is integral to maintaining one’s mental health. Uh, I am part of a wonderful community choir which helped me through a very difficult time in my life. Um, and the, the, um, act of singing in harmony with many other voices is very uplifting and I think… (laughs) What am I gonna say? Um, yeah, I mean everyone loves music, everyone loves singing, even if you’re bad at it, people will always sing, and if you can’t sing, just sing quietly (laughs). That is all (laughs).’

Alicia was photographed in Enmore Park, NSW Australia – June 2016.

Merryn, 33

How would you describe yourself?

‘Focused. Quiet. But surprise people.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Growing up in a regional community, I really encountered a lot of types who told the truth, and I guess uh, also, those values were kinda ingrained in me from an early age that integrity, honesty, telling it like it is. And as you grow up and become an adult you realise that not everyone does that and, that actually the world is a bit different and we do withhold information for various reasons, and uh, that world issues or other issues on the planet are sometimes caused by this whole thing about, not telling it like it is, so. Reflecting on that childhood has been really good (laughs) as an adult to come back to, why do we do what we do and how do we engage people better, in the world.’

Merryn was photographed in Enmore Park, NSW Australia – April 2016.

Fiona, 36

How would you describe yourself?

‘A practical person.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um, in Sydney, everyone’s so busy all the time and everyone’s always so tired. And I found that ditching the doona made me sleep better, and gave me more energy. And I also found that using a plain bedspread sort of decluttered my mind. And so both those things have made it I think easier to enjoy life in Sydney.’

Fiona was photographed in Enmore Park, NSW Australia – April 2016.

Bronwyn

How would you describe yourself?

‘Look, I think I’m a mixture of like an intense know-all with lots of opinions and like a silly, uh, laughing person. (laughs)’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Uh, it’s probably connected to my upbringing and about, you know my family is very big around inclusion and making sure everyone belonged and like, around people with disability, like I have siblings with disability, so, I think it’s just ingrained. (laughs) Yeah, but I think it is important to, like, we can make very simple, small choices to make sure everyone, you know, someone else’s life is better. Yeah. (laughs)’

Bronwyn was photographed in Enmore Park, NSW Australia – April 2016.

Karen, 33

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. I think I am, a social introvert.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um. Uh, I live abroad and I am constantly challenged by, uh, by, let me have another think. Um, yeah, I live abroad and it is very challenging understanding where I live and my surroundings so I’m constantly having to change my ideas of things and perspective, and I think it’s really healthy that people do that.’

Karen was photographed in Dulwich Hill NSW – January 2016.

Jade, 33

How would you describe yourself?

‘I don’t think I would describe myself, I never describe myself. (laughs)’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um it’s a bit of a mantra, um, both myself so it’s you know it’s kinda like, I’ll worry about things when I get to it ‘cause I have to, and um, also something I like to tell my friends, well I find myself telling my friends all the time, so it sort of, gives a bit of peace or something, yeah a bit of reassurance. Um, it’s true, like it’s often it’s amazing how your brain will kick in when it needs to and help you sort something out, yeah.’

Jade was photographed in Balmain NSW – December 2015.

Stephanie, 29

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um. Fun-loving but complex I’d say. (laughs)’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Because good things can happen, shit things can happen but all in all it’s just, life’s a journey so, yeah.’

Stephanie was photographed in Balmain NSW – December 2015.

Jillian, 32

How would you describe yourself?

‘Um the most sensitive person you’ll ever meet. I feel every emotion that anyone feels around me!’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘‘Cause I think it’s really important that we all stop judging each other and just support each other on the journey, of life.’

Jillian was photographed in Balmain NSW – December 2015.

Anna, 33

How would you describe yourself?

‘I’m a creative, food-obsessed hippy, with a big love for big ideas that, that’ll change the world and… impractical footwear and edible flowers.’

Why did you choose this message for your sign?

‘Um, I love this question because, if you’re trying to figure out what it is that you want to do with your life, it’s, it’s a really good question to ask because, it basically removes, all of the fear and all of the bullshit and, in essence you can figure out exactly what it is you want to do with your life. And I think so many of us live our lives, uh, in a little bit of fear and little bit of ‘oh, you know I’d love to do that but I never could,’ you know, and. And I think it’s so important to take a step back away from that and really clear out, everything that’s holding you back and go what is it that I really want to do and, you know what would I do if, if I know I couldn’t fail. And I think that is your calling.’

Anna was photographed in Balmain, NSW – December 2015.

Assaad, 33

How would you describe yourself?

‘I describe myself, er, I am a good person, honest, love people, and like to help. I, I choose this sentence ‘cause I live with many people, eh, two different country and many generation. So the best things I discover in my experience in the life, is to be happy, and enjoy the life, ‘cause nobody can take money or property with him when he die.’
